While Negrense farmers assert their right to land cultivation, a strafing incident left nine farmers killed in Negros Occidental, Saturday.

Some 40 armed men came with guns and shoot at a land cultivation area in Hacienda Nene in Sagay City, where members of National Federation of Sugar Workers is holding their bungkalan activity. The farmers were said to be resting for the night.

Fatalities, who included four women and two minors, add to the spate of farmers being killed under President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration. As per farmer group Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas, 163 farmers were dead in two years of Duterte.

Amid the rice crisis, haciendas, such one owned by a certain Barbara Tolentino, restrict food security and livelihood to Filipino farmers. Its very system breeds farmers in desolation while being subjected to vile labor.

The College Editors Guild of the Philippines demand #JusticeForSagay9 and the broad toiling peasantry, who struggle for a genuine agrarian reform.###
