Appointment of De Castro as CJ part of Duterte’s political consolidation for dictatorship
The College Editors Guild of the Philippines vehemently condemns the appointment of Teresita de Castro by madman Rodrigo Duterte as the country’s new Supreme Court Chief Justice, replacing the ousted Maria Lourdes Sereno.
“Teresita de Castro’s appointment as Chief Justice prove Duterte’s intensifying exercise of despotism to secure his position as a fascist dictator wannabe. De Castro is known to have penned dangerous landmark decisions that have only benefited the oligarchs and the ruling class,” said Jose Mari Callueng, CEGP national president.
De Castro was appointed to the Supreme Court in December 2007 by Arroyo. Her track record include the voting in favor of the burial of former dictator Ferdinand Macos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, the arrest of Senator Leila De Lima over alleged involvement in the National Bilibid Prison illegal drug trade, the ouster of Sereno on petition for quo warranto and the voting for the constitutionality of Duterte’s imposition of Martial law in Mindanao and the suspension of the privilege of habeas corpus and the yearlong extension of the same.
In addition, she also penned the landmark decision to junk the disqualification case against Joseph Estrada. She ruled that the pardon granted by former President and now House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo “restored his civil and political rights” thereby enabling him eligible to run in the 2013 polls.
“Duterte’s choice of De Castro does not only reflect his tendency to prioritize seniority as a consideratoin in key appointments. He is clearly appointing people that will blondly nod, follow and further enable his tyrannical and murderous regime,” Callueng said.
“De Castro will surely favor and embolden this regime that has been incessantly killing poor Filipinos and putting them in a state of national emergency,” he added.
The connivance of Duterte with his peers both in the Congress and the judiciary is a rustic plot of a cheap dictator wannabe hungry for power. But the people haven’t lost yet for in these dark times they will fight against a tyrannical regime
The College Editors Guild of the Philippines is calling on the Filipino people to intensify their militancy in showing disgust and dissent against Duterte’s tyrannical and murderous regime. There will be more dire consequences of the current political situation in our country and we should be ready to arduously struggle and launch massive mobilizations to fight Duterte’s dictatorship.
