CEGP decries killing of radio blocktimer in Albay
The College Editors Guild of the Philippines decries the killing of Joey Llana, a blocktimer of radio station dwZR, on July 20 at Daraga, Albay.
Llana was gunned down by unidentified assailants as he was leaving his home in Brgy. Penafrancia in Daraga town. He was on his way to host his program called Metrobanat, aired from 5:30 to 7:00 am.
Motive for Llana’s murder have yet to be determined by authorities. But Llana’s siblings stated that he has been receiving various death threats.
Llana is the 12th journalist killed under the Duterte regime. Last June, another radio reporter, Julius Barcellano, was gunned down by a riding-in-tandem on his way to his house in Rizal.
Last year, the Guild recorded military harassment and red-tagging of its officers and members in the Bicol region, particularly at Ateneo de Naga University and Baao Community College.
According to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, the recent media killing makes Bicol region the most dangerous area for journalists, along woth Caraga, which also has three broadcasters killed in fhe past two years.
The Guild demands justice to Llana and all the victims of the murderous regime of Duterte. CEGP will never cease its call to hold the culprits accountable for the worsening culture of impunity, along with the fascist attacks against the Filipino people.
