ConCom’s approval of proposed federalism constitution a ploy to hasten Duterte’s dictatorial rule
The approval of the Consultative Committee of the draft of the proposed charter that allows for a shift to a federal form of government is a ploy for President Rodrigo Duterte to further his regime’s attacks against the Filipino people and to advance his despotic dictatorship.
“While Duterte is launching wars of suppression against the Filipino people, he is hastening his dream of a centralized system of presidential dictatorship that will be ruled by dynasties, landlords and corrupt bureaucrats,” said Jose Mari Callueng, national president of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines.
Currently, the Filipino people are burdened by the increase in prices of basic commodities, rotten education system and a highly privatized and commercialized social services. In addition, Duterte is further emboldening his military forces to commit grave acts of human rights violations through Oplan Tokhang, Oplan Kapayapaan, martial law rule in Mindanao, Oplan Galugad and their planned amendments to the Human Security Act of 2007.
“With the Duterte regime’s intensifying fascist attacks, the amendment of the decades-old constitution will be nothing but a move to consolidate his political power that will serve the interest of his local corrupt cohorts and imperialist countries like the United States and China,” Callueng said.
A look at the proposed charter change of both the RBH 08 and the President’s party group Partido Demokratiko Pilipino at Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) provides extended terms of office for incumbent officials, exempts top government officials from paying income tax, and centralizes the powers to the President.
“Duterte has incessantly violated the country’s national sovereignty and has sold our national patrimony to imperialist countries. This casts ironies for many Filipinos, especially farmers, remain landless and are squatters in their own country, while the proposed charter change will rev up land ownership of foreign investors,” Callueng said.
Duterte has completely shown an utter disregard to the demands of the Filipino people, and is also completely unwilling to listen to the people’s clamor for substantive socio-economic reforms. With his intensifying tyrannical rule, Duterte will bow down to the also intensifying resistance of the Filipino people.
The College Editors Guild of the Philippines calls on the Filipino youth to resist and expose the despotic regime of Duterte and his continuous subservience to imperialist powers.
