FIGHT FOR JUSTICE, GENUINE PEACE CONTINUES
“Bloom where you are planted.” — Randy Felix Malayao (1969–2019)
Two years ago, a 49-year-old peace warrior and press freedom fighter Randy Malayao was murdered on January 30, 2019. He was shot at a close range while he was asleep inside a bus in Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya by state agents.
The College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) continues to fight for justice for the death of Randy Malayao. We deplore the continuing red-tagging and culture of impunity, especially under the fascist Duterte regime.
Malayao was a former Editor-in-Chief of Ang Mangingisda, the official student publication of UP-Miag-ao. He also served as CEGP Vice President for Visayas from 1991 to 1994. He helped revive inactive campus publications in the Visayas, then later returned to Manila to work full time at the CEGP’s national office.
In 2008, Randy was unjustly detained and tortured under then-President and plunderer Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. He was released after four years of battling trumped-up charges. He became a well-known human rights defender and served as Cagayan Valley coordinator of Bayan Muna Partylist.
The rotten reactionary system of the state paves way for the culture of impunity and corruption to persist while neglecting in giving health-based and effective measures, especially when we are in the middle of the pandemic.
The soaring numbers of fake surrendered of New People’s Army, the unending incidents of red-tagging, the Congress’s misplaced priorities of charter change in the middle of the pandemic, attacks against academic freedom, and blatant disregard of peace talks are manifestations of Duterte’s fascist regime.
The Guild calls on all campus publications, youth groups, press freedom, and peace advocates to carry on the fight for genuine and lasting peace of Randy Malayao. We continue to call for justice for all the victims of state-sponsored killings under Duterte’s tyrannical, ruthless, and fascist regime.
