Students send Duterte on the edge of seat aghast, frightened after nationwide walkout

THE youth and student movement are turning the tide.

President Rodrigo Duterte turned lily-livered after thousands of students across the country walked out from their classes last February 1 to protest against his tyrannical rule.

He especially pointed out the mobilization of the University of the Philippines-Diliman and lashed back at them, challenging them to get out of school and said without balls he will instead bring “bright” Lumads to the University.

Paper tiger Duterte, the leading purveyor of terrorism in the country, incessantly uses lies and deception for personal gains. He thinks he can cripple the growing rage of dissent and disgust towards his regime by poorly attempting to joust the indigenous people against the students who walked out from their classes.

Indigenous peoples have been welcomed ever since in various units of UP across the country. In fact, UP Diliman have hosted the Lakbayan ng Pambansang Minorya for several years already. Lumads even conduct alternative classes in their campus because of the intensified militarization and bombings of their schools and communities. After all, indigenous peoples have long been victims of the puppet regimes of this country and have endlessly fought for their right to self-determination.

Meanwhile, his double-edged threat on telling UP students to not go to school for a year because there is “good and free” education there is a pure hogwash. The Free Tuition Law is a mere palliative reform that does not solve the fundamental problems of our education system. It remains heavily commercialized and is even starker in character for relying on neoliberal policies.

Lumad schools are getting bombed and are continuously tagged as schools of the New People’s Army because their education system is going against the current of the dominating neoliberal education framework.

Several of Lumad schools like the Alternative Learning Center for Agricultural and Livelihood Development offers free and quality education. Its specialized curriculum is geared in being responsive to the needs of the Lumad community and not to the caprices of imperialist countries, thus a nationalist, scientific and mass oriented framework of education.

Duterte has no moral ascendancy. He tells that the youth are wasting their time protesting instead of seeing the legitimate calls and demands of the Filipino people. His balls go sore with the growing strength of the student movement which exposes his anti-Filipino policies and fascist attacks against the people.

The youth are not wasting their time fighting for ideology. It is Duterte who is wasting the time of the Filipino people. He might as well step down but nothing is sweeter than a mass movement fervently fighting a tyrant and eventually overthrowing it.

The College Editors Guild of the Philippines and its more than 750 member publications is one with the growing student movement and is set to protest against the US-Duterte regime this coming February 23.
